Snow, sweets, and surprises – my Fjället beginnings by Mariana

16.01.2025

Hello! I'm Mariana, from Romania, and I want to tell you about my first month in Sweden, at Fjället.

For a long time, I have wanted to participate in a volunteering experience that would allow me to contribute in a direct and real way to the life of a community. I believe that a healthy society depends on our ability to look beyond our own needs to give time and energy to others without expecting something in return. For me, this opportunity at Fjället is a form of active involvement but also a space to discover new things about myself and the world around me.

When I came here, I set out to use my time to be helpful but also to enjoy the challenges and opportunities that come with the experience. I've fallen in love with the weather here and its dynamics. From sunshine to light or heavy rain or snow, the weather never lets you get bored. It always has a surprise for you. Moreover, I am impressed by the balance between the urban environment and nature which seems to be omnipresent. This contrast makes me appreciate both the urban presence and the tranquility of green spaces, giving me a sense of peace and a deep connection with my surroundings.

My first encounter with Fjället was truly a surprise. My first day coincided with the Christmas dinner organized with the team, and this beginning was warmer and more welcoming than I could have imagined. It was also the moment I got a glimpse of Swedish cuisine and tried Julmust, the traditional Christmas drink, which is incredibly delicious—at least in my opinion.

As time went on, I started getting to know the people and the place better. I discovered a diverse team full of energy and enthusiasm, ready to help me adapt. However, the ones who impressed me the most are the young people. They are incredibly intelligent, brave, and highly independent. Every conversation with them reveals a vibrant curiosity, which inspires me to contribute as best as I can to my work here.

My first weeks in Sweden were filled with experiences that will stay with me for a long time. One of the most exciting activities was Laser Tag. It was my first time playing, and although I don't consider myself a very competitive person, the adrenaline and atmosphere made me thoroughly enjoy it. The laughter and the strategy (or lack thereof) turned this experience into a special memory.

On another day, we had the chance to cook Dubai chocolate with the young people—a dessert they love and often prepare. Their energy and enthusiasm for such activities are truly contagious.

My first month here has been full of challenges, discoveries, and authentic moments. This is just the beginning, and the experiences so far give me confidence that the coming months will bring even more stories to share.
